When you’re considering your career move, consider more than just the “big company name” or the “unlimited PTO”. Think about it, you’ll be spending 40 hours a week with a team. You’ll be working together, sharing ideas, learning from each other, sharing successes, and bouncing back from failed attempts. It’s all a part of the game. But one of the main things you’ll have to consider is the diversity of the team.
Diversity comes in many different forms - it’s not always about the women to men ratio, or tenured vs. entry-level; it’s understanding that everyone’s unique background can contribute to your professional development and the company’s success. Imagine if everyone thought the exact same things? #Boring
Workplace diversity not only positively impacts the company’s bottom line, it fosters an environment of belonging and respect between employees. You should be your authentic self and feel positive about the person you are. The team should be welcoming and tolerant of the differences. There should be mutual respect. Not only will you feel comfortable, but you’ll also strive to be the best version of yourself - challenging yourself each day to exceed your own expectations. You should feel empowered by the work you do - acknowledged and rewarded (fairly). The very thing that makes you, You, will be the very thing that sparks innovation at the company you’re signing on to work for. You are the gift. With a diverse team, you’ll learn so much more than just a “job”, you’ll learn about the life, ways of thinking and approaching opportunities, ways to overcome obstacles, things to consider when you’re living your day-to-day lives…the list goes on and on.
So, yes, while you’re job searching - ask the hard questions. Be inquisitive about the culture and don’t just accept the “we're like a family” description. Think about how you will feel each day in the environment working alongside the talent, ways that you can add more than just your degree to the equation, and above everything ways that you can really be YOU in all your glory!
